Summary

Heo Jae-hwan of Eugene Investment & Securities discusses the Fed's rate stance, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix's HBM4 competition, and the outlook for semiconductor stocks. He sees Korean equities supported by a Fed on hold, prefers Samsung for 2026 earnings but SK hynix for HBM4 execution, and remains constructive on semiconductors while flagging a DRAM price-growth peak as the key exit signal. He also highlights low-PBR Korean stocks as a multi-year opportunity and says KOSPI 5,000 is not automatically a new era, with a possible peak signaled by 6,000-point talk.

  • Fed rate cuts are expected to pause, which Heo views as historically favorable for Korean equities.
  • SK hynix reported strong memory demand and confidence on supply shortages; HBM4 execution remains its advantage.
  • Samsung Electronics is seen as having caught up in HBM4 and may benefit from faster-rising DRAM prices in overall 2026 earnings.
  • Semiconductor suppliers have gained pricing power over AI data-center customers, supporting buy-on-dips until at least mid-year.
  • The first semiconductor sell signal would be a peak in DRAM price growth and a stall in P/E compression.
  • Low-PBR Korean stocks may be a two-to-three-year opportunity as policy reforms cushion drawdowns.
  • Heo says KOSPI 5,000 is not necessarily a new era; 6,000-point market talk could mark peak sentiment.

Fed pause favors Korean equities
The Fed is likely to keep rates on hold through year-end, and the late phase of an easing cycle—after cuts pause but before hikes begin—has historically been the most favorable period for equities. In that phase, the Korean market has tended to outperform the U.S. market, so Korean equities remain relatively attractive.

SK hynix demand and HBM4 lead
SK hynix's earnings call showed very strong demand—whatever it makes can be sold—and inventory is likely to decline, easing fears of an early earnings peak despite capacity expansion. In HBM4, SK hynix is still the safer, preferred operator because it has already been validated with TSMC and execution risk is lower than for Samsung as Samsung scales up.

Samsung HBM4 catch-up improves earnings
Samsung Electronics deserves a warmer view this year than last year. Its HBM4 effort has sharply narrowed the gap with SK hynix, and its integrated semiconductor capabilities across design, manufacturing, and process give it catch-up potential. In addition, with DRAM prices rising even faster than HBM prices and showing no sign of falling, Samsung's overall 2026 earnings could hold up longer than SK hynix's.

Semiconductor suppliers gain pricing power
The AI data-center buildout has made memory, DRAM, and HBM buyers price-insensitive, shifting bargaining power from Big Tech customers to semiconductor suppliers. With Nasdaq weak while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has risen, semiconductor stocks should remain supported and buy-on-dips opportunities should continue at least through mid-year.

Low-PBR Korean stocks remain multi-year opportunity
Government normalization and corporate-governance/PBR reform policies were not the main driver of the KOSPI 5000 move, but their effect should show up when the market corrects, cushioning drawdowns and helping re-rate deeply undervalued Korean companies. Very low-PBR, undervalued Korean stocks should therefore be a multi-year opportunity over the next two to three years.
