Summary

Adam Back, CEO and co-founder of Blockstream, discusses Bitcoin's origins, proof-of-work, halving, privacy, quantum risk, decentralization, and adoption with David Lin and Bonnie Blockchain. He remains long-term bullish on Bitcoin as digital gold, arguing it can approach gold's market cap and a much larger $200T monetary-premium opportunity as institutional and retail adoption grows. He also explains how Liquid supports 24/7 Bitcoin-denominated trading of MicroStrategy and Meta Planet treasury-company shares via mNAV relative-value trades.

  • Adam Back recounts early Bitcoin history and Satoshi's white paper citation.
  • He argues Bitcoin's four-year halving still drives market cycles because long-term holders shrink tradable supply.
  • He says ETF and institutional flows are concentrated in Bitcoin, helping it gain share versus altcoins.
  • He describes institutional adoption as early, citing ETFs, BlackRock's 2% recommendation, and custody regulatory changes.
  • He sees Bitcoin's decentralized node network as resistant to shutdown or centralized control.
  • He calls quantum computing a long-term signature risk that is decades away and manageable.
  • He explains Liquid's securitized MicroStrategy and Meta Planet shares and a Bitcoin-denominated mNAV relative-value trade.

Bitcoin targets gold and $200T markets
The next wave of Bitcoin adoption is institutional and still early. ETFs give broker and financial-adviser clients easier access; BlackRock recommended a 2% allocation to a diversified portfolio; managed fund allocation remains extremely low. Regulatory improvements are letting established custodians enter Bitcoin custody, which should make it easier for managed funds to participate, and layer 2s like Liquid broaden Bitcoin's utility.

Bitcoin gains share while altcoins lag
Bitcoin is increasing its market share. ETF and institutional money coming from high-net-worth and retail portfolios is being allocated into Bitcoin rather than other coins, and professional managers are focused on Bitcoin. This cycle has seen Bitcoin rise while other crypto assets shrink in market share.

Trade treasury shares against Bitcoin mNAV
Liquid now supports securitized Bitcoin-correlated treasury company shares, first MicroStrategy and more recently Meta Planet. These are held by a custodian, enrolled like securities, and tradable 24/7 in a non-custodial, Bitcoin-denominated OTC market. This enables a Bitcoin basis relative-value trade: buy treasury company shares when mNAV is low, sell when higher, and buy back Bitcoin to increase Bitcoin holdings. The 24/7 market also helps fill gaps when traditional markets are closed or halted, including Meta Planet's Japanese market halts and ADR/Japan price differences.
