Paul Gabrail Host / Value Investor Everything Money
Avoid buying IPOs on day one
US IPOs on average pop about 19% on day one, but that gain mostly goes to insiders or institutions that received IPO allocations. Buying after the first-day pop has historically underperformed the market by about 21 percentage points over the next three years. SpaceX, the hottest IPO ever, priced at $135, spiked to $225, then fell below $105 within two months. Buying day-one IPO hype is a reliable way to lose money, and lockup expirations can add further selling pressure.
