Venezuelan debt rallies on stable transition
Venezuela has about $30 billion of sovereign debt and $30 billion of PDVSA debt outstanding; both trade around 25-30 cents on the dollar and have rallied in recent weeks. If a stable post-Maduro transition emerges and Venezuela moves to make good on its defaulted debt, the bonds could rally much more; absent a stable transition, recovery and price direction are uncertain.

Venezuela debt rally needs stable transition
Schatzker points to roughly $30 billion each of defaulted Venezuelan sovereign debt and PDVSA debt, with the debt still trading around 25-30 cents on the dollar after recent rallies. He says a sense that Venezuela will ultimately make good on the defaulted debt under a new stable regime could drive a much stronger rally, while no sign of a stable transition leaves the outcome unpredictable.
