Korea is developing next-gen icebreaking container ships.
China has recently built many icebreaking container ships and launched NewNew Shipping to run a China-Russia Arctic container route, but current operations are small, seasonal, and commercially weak. To compete and protect Busan's transshipment role, Korea's government and shipbuilders have launched development of next-generation 8,000 TEU icebreaking container ships with strong icebreaking capability, aiming to use Korean shipbuilding technology to gain an edge over China.
