Chinese open-source AI models beat US rivals
Washington's export controls on Anthropic acted as free advertising for Chinese open-source AI: models from Jipu and DeepSeek are self-hostable, so they cannot be switched off by US regulators, and they are dramatically cheaper, with DeepSeek's flagship at about $0.87 per million output tokens, roughly 60x less than Fable 5. Usage data already show Chinese models dominating OpenRouter, and if AI is not a natural monopoly, margins collapse and the productivity benefits flow to users and Chinese model providers rather than to frontier-lab investors.
