Nicholas Burns Harvard University professor and former U.S. Ambassador to China CNBC
Iran's economy collapsing under sanctions pressure
Burns argues the Trump administration is targeting Iran's economic pain point: Iran's economy is in much worse shape than before the war, with the currency worth far less, hyperinflation, scarcity and public pain. He supports the pressure campaign and thinks the current patience/staring contest is more difficult for Iran, making Iranian assets and currency unattractive.

Iran economy strained by sanctions pressure.
US economic pressure on Iran has already crashed the Iranian currency, inflation is around 66%, unemployment has risen since the start of the year, and the UAE is cutting trade ties; further sanctions tightening should deepen economic strain, making broad Iranian exposure unattractive even without a predicted regime collapse.

Iranian rial faces structural collapse
The Iranian rial is in a severe structural collapse driven mainly by the Islamic regime's poor macroeconomic management, including money printing to fund fiscal deficits, price controls, subsidies, and multiple exchange rates, rather than sanctions alone. The rial fell from about 70 per dollar in 1979 to around 1.42-1.47 million per dollar, with inflation near 50% a year, and the currency crisis helped trigger the largest protests since 1979. This supports a bearish view on the rial.
