Consumers shift to smaller-ticket retail items.
December consumer data showed a rebound after a soft November, and the US consumer has not run out of gas. Spending growth was driven by volume and transactions, but consumers are adapting by focusing on smaller-ticket items. General merchandise and clothing were beneficiaries, while big-ticket splurges such as durables, furniture, electronics, and travel pulled back. This favors retailers exposed to smaller-ticket general merchandise and clothing, and argues for caution on big-ticket durables, furniture, electronics, and travel.
