Google's cadence, TPUs and free bundling win AI
The author claims Alphabet has effectively won the AI model race because it ships major Gemini generations roughly quarterly (Gemini 2.0 Feb 2025, 2.5 June 2025, 3.0 preview Nov 2025) while OpenAI and Anthropic manage about one update per year. The mechanism is structural: Google owns the full stack (TPU silicon since 2015, proprietary Borg cluster management, data centers, Chrome/Android/Workspace distribution), so it can bundle frontier intelligence for free as a loss leader, replicating Microsoft's bundling of Internet Explorer against Netscape and destroying standalone paid-model economics. Catalyst/horizon is the 2025-2026 cadence window in which OpenAI is projected to lose $14bn and must fund GPT-5 training against free Google features. Main stated risk concerns come only from the LPs funding the competing labs, not from Google, who the author views as the incumbent utility owner.
