Howard Lutnick has been the 41st US Secretary of Commerce since February 21, 2025, serving in President Donald Trump's second administration. As secretary he has spoken for the administration on tariffs, trade negotiations, semiconductor manufacturing and artificial intelligence. Before entering government he spent his career at Cantor Fitzgerald, which he joined in 1983 after graduating from Haverford College with a degree in economics; he became its president and chief executive in 1991 and chairman in 1996. He led Cantor through the September 11, 2001 attacks, which killed 658 of the firm's 960 New York-based employees, and started the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund for the victims' families. In 2004 he created BGC Partners, now BGC Group, from Cantor's brokerage business and served as its chairman and chief executive; he was also executive chairman of the commercial real estate adviser Newmark. He co-chaired Trump's 2024 presidential transition team and stepped down from his positions at Cantor, BGC and Newmark on his Senate confirmation in February 2025.
