Summary

Bill Winters, CEO of Standard Chartered, discusses geopolitical risks, trade barriers, US dollar diversification, the credit cycle, the US economy, and crypto/stablecoins at Davos. He sees the global economy as resilient despite higher trade barriers, expects gradual USD diversification, and says the credit cycle will return but the system is safer. He is bullish on stablecoins moving into traditional banking and considers Standard Chartered still cheap with wealth management growth ambitions.

  • Winters worries most about a complete breakdown in geopolitical dialogue, not current talks.
  • Higher trade barriers are a new reality, but the global economy is still resilient.
  • He expects long-term diversification away from the US dollar in reserves and trade invoicing, though USD still dominates.
  • He says the credit cycle will return but private credit is less leveraged and the financial system is safer.
  • The US economy is strong with inflation not out of control, though budget deficits pose a credit downgrade risk.
  • He sees stablecoins and digital money moving into traditional banking and rewiring the financial system.
  • Standard Chartered's share price is at record highs but he still calls it cheap.
  • The bank wants to build its wealth management franchise through acquisitions or partnerships.

Long-term diversification away from US dollar
Winters sees a long-term diversification away from the US dollar in reserve allocations and trade invoicing. He notes the euro was created partly as an alternative reserve currency, the share of reserves held in USD has been declining, and the proportion of trade denominated in USD is going down significantly. China has an interest in non-USD payment flows due to the weaponization of the dollar, and convenient non-USD channels will continue to develop. He stresses the dollar still dominates and nobody is saying to underweight the US, making this a gradual trend rather than an immediate bearish call.

Stablecoins to rewire banking, early green shoots
Winters says stablecoins, tokenized bank deposits, and other digital money are in very early stages of moving from the self-contained crypto community into traditional banking and fiat currency. They are beginning to be used as a medium of exchange for trade and payments, which he expects will lead to a complete rewiring of the banking and financial system. He says Standard Chartered has been working on this for eight years, with early green shoots, but it is going to happen.

Standard Chartered still cheap with wealth growth
Winters says Standard Chartered's share price has run up to record highs, but he still considers the stock cheap. He highlights the bank's cross-border business and its affluent client/wealth management franchise as critically important, noting it is the fastest-growing wealth manager in Asia, Middle East and Africa and third largest overall, a very attractive business. He says they would love to build out the wealth management portfolio through acquisitions or partnerships, providing a potential catalyst.
