39 years old $481k invested/saved for retirement. Looking for portfolio advice with a goal of retiring around 55
I’m 39 and trying to simplify and properly invest my retirement accounts for a long-term goal of potentially retiring around age 55.
Here’s what I currently have:
**Roth IRA — $7,000**
FSKAX (Total U.S. Stock Market)
FTIHX (Total International)
FXNAX (U.S. Bond Index)
**Roth 401(k) — $18,000**
Currently sitting in cash
**Solo 401(k) — $332,000**
Currently sitting in cash after a recent transfer
**HSA — $14,000**
FDEWX (Fidelity Freedom Index 2055)
**Old employer 403(b) — $110,000**
VFIFX (Vanguard Target Retirement 2050)
Total: approximately **$481,000**
My biggest concern is that I currently have about **$350,000 sitting in cash** between the Roth 401(k) and Solo 401(k) after transferring the money, and I need to decide how to invest it.
My goal is long-term growth and potentially retiring around **age 55**, giving me roughly a 16-year time horizon.
I’m considering keeping things simple with a Boglehead-style portfolio using broad U.S. stocks, international stocks, and some bonds.
A few questions:
How would you invest the $332k Solo 401(k) and $18k Roth 401(k)?
What overall U.S./international/bond allocation would you use at age 39 with a goal of retiring at 55?
Should I treat all of these accounts as **one portfolio** when determining my asset allocation rather than giving each account its own allocation?
Does it make sense to keep FDEWX in the HSA and VFIFX in the old 403(b), or would you simplify those as well?
Are there any tax-location advantages to holding certain assets in the Roth accounts versus the traditional Solo 401(k)?
For someone hoping to retire at 55, when would you start increasing the bond allocation?
I’m not interested in individual-stock picking or trying to beat the market. I’m primarily looking for a diversified, low-cost, relatively simple portfolio that I can stick with for the next 15+ years.
What would you change?
