I think AI companies are making a play for a bailout Ask yourself: do you really think absolute psychopaths like Sam Altman and Elon Musk would *ever* call to regulate or “pause” AI development for the good of humanity? All while they’re heavily indebted and haven’t seen anything close to the revenue required to pay off their creditors when the bills start coming due in just a few months? I think their play is: (1) Declare unabated AI development unsafe, put their own developers on cable news to make the case for them (2) Ask for a “pause” via some kind of negotiated legislation with the government (3) As part of this pause, ask for compensation to prevent bankruptcy that would have resulted from their precarious financial position. They were on the verge of AGI and taking over the world, after all! All of this also has the benefit of keeping the hype cycle going with sentiment of, “Holy crap! AI is so superpowerful that they’re trying to pause its development!” I think this has some relationship to Chuck Schumer’s daughter being hired by OpenAI, but I digress. If they ask for any kind of money in exchange for pausing AI development, that will be the tell.
