Big Tech can afford the AI boom. Can everyone financing it? AI capex has always been like: more GPUs, more data centers, more power infrastructure, and eventually more growth. But BIS is now warning that the scale of this investment could create risks for financial stability. It estimates the five biggest tech companies could spend more than $1 trillion on AI in 2025–2026, while total AI investment could reach around $4 trillion by 2030. I know more AI spending could still bring more productivity and revenue if it pays off. But the money isn’t coming only from Big Tech’s own cash flow anymore. Debt and private credit are part of it too, as AI projects get bigger and more expensive. Google or Microsoft can probably handle it if the returns take longer than expected. But what about the companies and investors financing all the infrastructure behind them? Could AI still be successful while some of that financing becomes a problem?
