EMAT : why this stock is going to go to the moon starting jan 2027
U.S. military drones rely heavily on rare-earth magnets supplied through a global supply chain overwhelmingly dominated by China. With the Pentagon about to sharply restrict Chinese-sourced magnets starting in January, one of the few companies already producing them outside China's supply chain is Evolution Metals & Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:EMAT).
High-performance Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnets are what keep unmanned aerial vehicles flying. They power the brushless electric motors that generate thrust, the precision actuators that control flight surfaces, and the stabilized gimbals that hold targeting cameras steady during aggressive maneuvering. Even a small tactical quadcopter relies on multiple motors, each containing rare-earth magnets. Larger military platforms also use rare-earth materials across motors, actuators, sensors, radar, and electronic systems. For components exposed to extreme heat, the military uses Samarium-Cobalt (SmCo) magnets, which retain their field strength at temperatures that would degrade standard alternatives.
According to IEA data, China controls roughly 60% of global rare-earth mining, about 90% of refined output, and over 90% of sintered (heat-fused) permanent-magnet production. For the heavy rare earths that give military-grade magnets their heat tolerance, like dysprosium and terbium, Western supply has depended almost entirely on China, which accounted for an estimated 99% of the West's heavy rare earths as recently as 2024.
The 2027 Deadline
Starting January 1, 2027, the updated Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) prohibits defense contractors, with limited exceptions, from procuring high-performance magnets mined, refined, separated, or produced in China, Russia, Iran, or North Korea. The rule applies at every tier of the supply chain: a magnet assembled domestically from Chinese-refined feedstock is still noncompliant.
The regulatory pressure intensified in July 2026 with Executive Order 14415, which tightens the waiver process contractors have relied on. The order requires formal mitigation plans for certain waivers and directs the Department of War to develop regulations requiring contractors to trace critical supply chains through detailed Bills of Materials. Fraud or deliberate misrepresentations in mitigation plans can be referred to the Attorney General, while failure to qualify alternative sources where required could become grounds for contract suspension or termination.
The Midstream Gap
The U.S. government has recognized the problem. In July 2025, the Department of Defense purchased $400 million in preferred stock in MP Materials (NYSE:MP), paired with a 10-year price floor of $110 per kilogram for NdPr (neodymium-praseodymium) products, a key rare-earth input, with off-take secured by defense and commercial customers at MP's planned 10X magnet facility. But that plant is not expected to begin commissioning until approximately 2028, well past the DFARS deadline.
The bottleneck is not in the ground. It is in the middle of the supply chain: the refining, separation, alloying, and sintering steps that turn raw ore into a finished magnet. Building that infrastructure can take years to develop and qualify.
Where Evolution Metals Fits
EM&T sits in that midstream gap. Unlike companies still building first facilities, EM&T's operating subsidiaries have produced bonded rare-earth magnets commercially for over 18 years, with sintered magnets now in commercial-scale production and sale. The company recently appointed retired U.S. Air Force General Thomas A. Bussiere to its board of directors, adding senior defense leadership as the regulatory shift accelerates.
In June 2026, EM&T completed OEM qualification with two global Tier-1 electronics OEMs across six sintered grades, including heavy-rare-earth compositions. In July, it received its first non-China shipment of NdPr metal, the primary rare-earth input for permanent magnets, through SRE Vietnam, a Tokai subsidiary, under contract with Senri. EM&T says this establishes a DFARS-compliant feedstock source with deliveries expected to continue scaling.
EM&T has signed binding purchase agreements with ULVAC for additional sintered magnet production machines arriving November 2026. Combined with a planned expansion at its Pohang, South Korea facility, where Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has agreed in principle to upgrade electrical infrastructure from 130 MW to 750 MW, nearly a sixfold increase, and Pohang City and Gyeongbuk Province are providing a conditional $20.7 million grant alongside approximately 1.3 million square feet of land EM&T plans to acquire, the company is targeting approximately 10,000 metric tonnes of annual magnet capacity, including 6,000 tonnes of high-performance sintered product.
With the DFARS deadline months away and Executive Order 14415 narrowing the waiver path, defense contractors face a closing window to qualify compliant magnet sources. EM&T's combination of proven production, non-China feedstock, and rapidly scaling capacity positions it among the few companies that could deliver at scale when the mandate takes effect.
