$DFSC BLISS, the laser warning system. 2019: KWESST/DEFSEC developed a laser-threat detection and location system in response to a request from an allied NATO country. The original concept had three versions: soldier-worn, squad-level, and vehicle-mounted. 2023: DEFSEC filed a U.S. patent for the BLaDE laser-detection core module and pursued an OEM/component strategy for armored vehicles. 2023: Four BLDS systems were ordered for integration on Norwegian Special Forces combat patrol vehicles. June 2025: Prototypes of BLDS were ordered for evaluation under a major North American armored-vehicle program. The prototypes were subsequently delivered, and a next-generation networked version was developed. DEFSEC stated that low-rate initial quantities were ordered for customer evaluations. The next-generation system increased detection capability, with management citing up to 3 km detection range, wider coverage, intelligent false-positive filtering and sensor-failure alerts. The next-generation concept is based on low-cost/disposable sensors deployable across soldiers, vehicles and fixed sites. March 2026: DEFSEC launched BLISS — Battlespace Laser Identification Sensor System, the next-generation evolution of BLDS. BLISS adds emitter identification/classification, rather than simply detecting a laser. BLISS is designed for networked battlefield awareness, allowing multiple sensors to share threat information. BLISS is being integrated with TAK (Team Awareness Kit) so threat information can be displayed within an existing tactical situational-awareness environment. Published BLISS specifications include approximately 2 W power consumption, 10–17 VDC, 250 g weight and a 6-pin connector. April 2026: Two networked BLISS systems were shipped to the U.S. Army Yuma Test Center for testing. August 2026: DEFSEC announced that BLISS testing had been completed with a U.S. Army vehicle program. DEFSEC was also invited to a separate U.S. Army-hosted sensor evaluation for another program. The Army's broader 2026 sensor experimentation is focused on integrating multiple sensors into a common C-UAS/battlefield architecture; there is no public proof that BLISS participated in the specific event. The U.S. Army has an established Vehicle Protection System (VPS) program incorporating laser-warning capability. A 2025 RFI stated that the potential requirement could exceed 4,000 kits, but this is not a confirmed BLISS order. DEFSEC has not publicly announced selection of BLISS for the 4,000-unit VPS requirement. DSEF: DEFSEC is a contractor providing Canadian DND/Army software engineering, including indirect-fire, artillery, sniper-ballistics and C2 applications. Land C4ISR: DEFSEC is a subcontractor to Thales on Canadian Army C4ISR work, including battle-management applications, ATAK, weapons, sensors and dynamic Call-for-Fire capabilities. DEFSEC's DSEF/LC4ISR organization has expanded substantially, reaching roughly 43 resources and C$9.4M annualized billings by Q2 FY2026. September 2026 hiring includes LC4ISR/ISTAR software engineering and a Senior Configuration Management Specialist responsible for software, firmware and hardware baselines. There is no public proof that BLISS itself is currently a DSEF/Land C4ISR deliverable, but the technologies have clear technical overlap. The broader potential architecture is: BLISS sensor — network — TAK/ISTAR — C4ISR — shared battlefield awareness — targeting/action. Q3 FY2026 revenue: C$2.72M, up 92% YoY. Digitization government-program revenue: up 121% YoY in Q3. June 30, 2026 cash and short-term investments were approximately C$3.53M before the subsequent August financing. August 2026 financing: approximately C$5.54M gross, intended for business/market development, IP protection/registrations and working capital. The central investment question has shifted from “Can DEFSEC develop the technology?” toward “Can it convert military evaluation into integration, adoption and production?” The potential inflection point is therefore the convergence of seven years of laser-sensing development + BLISS networking/TAK + U.S. Army testing + armored-vehicle opportunities + DEFSEC's growing C4ISR/ISTAR capability.
