Summary
Post explores quantum-computing investing after a documentary and AI-assisted research, naming IonQ, Quantinuum, Rigetti, D-Wave, IBM, Google, and Microsoft.
Author’s tentative view: IonQ has commercial momentum, Quantinuum is technically strong, and IBM/Google/Microsoft are safer but less pure-play exposure.
Quality: Speculative early-stage research, not disciplined value DD; lacks financial metrics, valuation analysis, or independent verification.

I recently watched a documentary about quantum computing and got curious about the space from an investing perspective. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1\_gJp2uAjO0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_gJp2uAjO0)
I did a bit of research with ChatGPT and the names that stood out most were IonQ, Quantinuum, Rigetti, D-Wave, IBM, Google and Microsoft. IonQ seems to have strong commercial momentum, Quantinuum looks very strong technically, while IBM/Google/Microsoft feel like safer ways to get exposure without betting everything on one quantum architecture.
What I’m still struggling with is understanding which technology will actually win long term — trapped ions, superconducting, photonics, neutral atoms, etc. Curious to hear from people following the sector closely: what companies or technologies do you think are genuinely ahead, and what am I missing?
Author highlights IonQ for strong commercial momentum among quantum pure plays. Commercial traction is a key differentiator in an early-stage, hype-heavy sector. Watch IonQ for revenue/contract milestones; no author buy/sell conviction. Quantum technology is unproven at scale; architecture could lose.
Author identifies IBM as a safer quantum exposure versus pure plays. Large-cap resources lower single-architecture failure risk. Potential defensive way to participate, but quantum is a small part of IBM. Quantum upside may be immaterial to overall business value.
Author lists Google as one of the safer large-cap quantum exposure routes. Strong R&D resources give Google credible long-term quantum optionality. Watch for quantum breakthroughs, but not a dedicated quantum bet. Quantum likely immaterial to Alphabet earnings for years.
Author sees Microsoft as a safer way to gain quantum exposure. Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise reach could help scale future quantum services. Wide-moat tech with quantum optionality; not a pure-play thesis. Quantum impact on near-term earnings is negligible.
