Just thought I'd share my theory here.
I've been buying shipping stocks for a year already and went all-in when the war started.
My logic is pretty simple. Without shipping, modern society as it is today, would collapse.
The top market cap companies are nearly all AI and software-related, plus obviously NVIDIA who benefits from all of it.
However, oil and other reserves are eventually going to run out worldwide since there aren't enough ships to resupply due to the war and longer routes. If that starts an energy crisis, data centers are the first to fall so the population stays alive, that's just a simple priority for the governments.
If data centers get restricted or forced to shut down, the entire AI circle breaks. Companies stop ordering GPUs, NVIDIA starts falling, and it all triggers a panicked chain reaction.
Crypto is already down pretty much all-around 20-40-60%+ YTD because people are pulling their money out. The next is likely AI since it's not required for everyday survival. ChatGPT can generate funny cat videos, but it won't magically restock the oil reserves, and nobody can eat API tokens either.
So it basically all gets back to the first point of my post, which is shipping. If capital flees the AI bubble, crypto, software companies, it will likely go into sectors that actually keep the lights on and keep the world running.
Shipping is treated as an ugly, dirty, cyclical sector and is pretty much ignored until the physical reality hits the wall. In my opinion, that wall is pretty close already, data centers can't scale up infinitely due to the insane energy requirements.
