A lot of investors see record copper output from China and assume it means supply is abundant. I think the opposite argument deserves attention.
China's production numbers highlight how dependent the global copper market has become on Chinese smelter economics, concentrate availability, and sulphuric-acid pricing. When one region becomes this important to the supply chain, it creates vulnerability. Any disruption in margins, acid markets, imports, or refining capacity can ripple through the entire industry.
That is one reason I keep looking at North American copper names. British Columbia already has a mining ecosystem that includes operating mines, processing expertise, transportation infrastructure, and industrial chemical supply chains. Teck's Trail Operations produces sulphuric acid, while companies like Chemtrade, Univar Solutions, and Brenntag provide additional production and distribution exposure across Canada.
For NovaRed (NRED/NREDF), this doesn't guarantee exploration success, but it strengthens the broader investment thesis. Wilmac is a BC copper-gold project being advanced in a jurisdiction that already understands mining and supports the industries around it.
As AI infrastructure, electrification, and power-grid expansion continue increasing copper demand, I think investors will start paying more attention to where future supply comes from and how secure those supply chains actually are.
