One of the more overlooked copper stories this month came from Cochilco, Chile's copper commission. The agency raised its 2026 copper price forecast to $5.55 per pound and expects prices to remain elevated at $5.10 per pound in 2027.
What's interesting is the reasoning behind the increase. Cochilco isn't talking about a temporary spike or speculative frenzy. The report points to continued demand growth from electrification, AI infrastructure, data centers, energy systems and electric vehicles while supply remains relatively tight.
For investors looking at copper developers and explorers, that matters. Higher long-term copper prices can change how projects are viewed, financed and prioritized. A deposit that looks marginal at one copper price can become far more attractive at another.
That is part of why I continue watching NovaRed Mining ($NRED / $NREDF). Wilmac is still an exploration-stage copper-gold project and the geology still has to prove itself. However, if major copper-producing nations and industry agencies are forecasting sustained high copper prices years into the future, the market may begin assigning greater value to district-scale copper exploration stories.
The company cannot control copper prices and it cannot control future discoveries. What it can do is continue advancing Wilmac while the broader copper market backdrop appears to be improving.
If Cochilco is right, the next decade may be less about finding copper demand and more about finding enough copper supply.
