One of the most interesting copper articles this week flips the entire narrative in a way most investors are not thinking about yet.
The issue is not just finding copper. It is processing it.
According to a recent [Mining.com](http://Mining.com) op-ed, the real constraint in copper production right now is sulfur and sulfuric acid, not geology.
That is a big shift in perspective.
Global sulfuric acid production is already massive, over 260M tonnes per year, and it is critical not just for mining but also for fertilizers, chemicals, and industrial systems.
Here is where it gets interesting for copper specifically.
About 40% of global sulfuric acid exports come from metal smelting, and China has built nearly half of the world’s copper smelting capacity.
Then suddenly:
China halted sulfuric acid exports
Middle East sulfur supply got disrupted
multiple regions restricted exports
And the result was immediate.
Acid prices doubled in some regions like Chile, which directly impacts copper production, especially heap leach operations that rely heavily on sulfuric acid.
Now the key insight:
For every 1 tonne of copper produced, roughly 3 to 3.5 tonnes of sulfuric acid are generated or required depending on the process.
So copper production is not just about ore anymore.
It is about:
access to acid
processing infrastructure
chemical supply chains
That changes how the market thinks about supply.
Even if copper is sitting in the ground, it does not matter if you cannot process it efficiently.
And this is where the bullish angle comes in.
The system is showing stress not just at the resource level, but at the processing level.
That means future supply is not just about:
“who has copper deposits”
It becomes:
“who can build integrated, resilient supply chains around those deposits”
Now connect that to early-stage companies like NRED.
NovaRed is not producing copper today. It is still an exploration-stage company in British Columbia, working on building out its Wilmac copper-gold project.
Why that matters in this context:
If the bottleneck is shifting toward processing and supply chain complexity, then:
jurisdiction quality becomes more important
infrastructure access becomes more important
future project design becomes more important
NRED sits in a stable mining jurisdiction and is still early enough to adapt its future development approach around these constraints.
It is not locked into legacy processing systems or existing supply dependencies.
That is a subtle but important advantage in a system that is becoming more complex.
The bigger takeaway from the article is this:
Copper scarcity is not just about how much is in the ground.
It is about how difficult it is becoming to turn that copper into usable metal at scale.
And when supply chains start breaking at multiple points, the entire upstream pipeline, including exploration, starts to matter more.
That is usually when the market begins to look further ahead than just current production numbers.
