For those who don't follow this stuff closely, export controls on advanced chips and server hardware are a genuinely big deal right now. The US government has been tightening restrictions on what tech can flow to certain countries, and violations aren't slapped-on-the-wrist stuff. This goes through the Southern District of New York, which is not exactly known for going easy on defendants. What makes it messier is the timing. Supermicro is already carrying baggage from the Hindenburg short report and the whole accounting delay saga from the past couple of years.
