I spend my days looking at raw data rooms and underwriting private enterprise infrastructure.
This week, Vinod Khosla tweeted that an AI chatbot named "Emergent Labs" and "Lovable" as the fastest software companies to ever hit $100M ARR.
What the tweet left out: Khosla Ventures just led the $70M Series B for Emergent last month, and participated in the $330M Series B for Lovable a few weeks prior.
The market has completely abandoned forensic underwriting. VCs are now using hallucinated LLM outputs as "due diligence" to pump their own books. But if you actually look at the unit economics of these "vibe-coding" tools, the math is terrifying.
1. **Zero Integration Friction = Zero Switching Costs:** The entire pitch of these companies is that non-technical founders can build apps instantly in plain English. But the fundamental physics of B2B software hasn't changed. If an AI wrapper takes zero effort to install, it takes zero effort to rip out. There is no enterprise lock-in.
2. **The "Innovation Budget" Trap:** Hitting $100M ARR in 8 months isn't organic demand; it’s top-down enterprise panic. CIOs are being handed massive budgets to "buy AI." Startups are capturing this low-quality revenue, but it comes with massive churn the second a cheaper native model is released.
3. **The Multiple Arbitrage:** While the tourists are incinerating LP capital on these zero-friction wrappers at 100x multiples, real infrastructure is being ignored. Unglamorous API plumbing (like KYC and payment rails) that actually takes 6 months to integrate—creating massive switching costs—is quietly clearing 75% gross margins at a 4x forward multiple.
When the subprime compute bubble bursts, the capital will ruthlessly rotate back to what actually matters: entrenched infrastructure with massive switching costs.
Stop buying the hype. Read the raw MIS files.
