Catastrophe bonds (CAT bonds) seem to be moving out of niche territory and into more regular portfolios. They’re a type of insurance-linked security that typically offers equity-like returns, relatively low volatility, and low correlation with traditional markets. Because payouts are tied to natural disasters rather than economic cycles, some investors see them as a diversification tool rather than a pure risk-on asset. Andy Palmer from Swiss Re mentioned that there’s been a mental shift around this asset class, with more institutions starting to treat CAT bonds as a standard part of allocations instead of something exotic. According to him, that change in perception looks set to continue. Feels like another example of investors looking beyond stocks and bonds for uncorrelated returns especially with so much uncertainty in traditional markets.
