Learning accounting by taking proper course or accountants are at a better advantage than a common investor- has been said quite often in the comments.
What is the advantage that a proper accounting course has given?
Understanding a business, its MOAT is different from being an accountant. In addition, there are a lot of resources for reading the annual statements and to learn how they fit together. Which kind of gives an idea of how the money is working. Observing their trend helps highlight any issues which are popping up. I play within my circle of competence.
However, I don’t feel confident about certain sectors, say banking stocks. I am considering if it is worth to do a university course on accounting on the side.
where do you see a real advantage for an accountant? How did an accounting course help you in one of your investments. Would love to hear your examples.
P.S. (I had couple of years experience on non-finance side of CAPEX, more like evaluating if a project proposal is sound. Also no finance degree. That job hones the analytical skills and helped me gain some familiarity with finance terminology used, but was in no way a finance industry job.)
