Whatever your view of his moves – and it is striking how ostensibly market-friendly capitalists can either overlook this extraordinary level of government intervention, or even enthusiastically welcome it – one thing is clear: Trump knows how to command global attention.
Equally striking is how little markets seem to care. Despite the barrage of policy shocks, the S&P 500 has risen 3.3 per cent over the past month, while the ASX 200 has outperformed with a 3.7 per cent gain. That strength reflects Australia’s exposure to booming commodity markets, where surging gold and silver prices, along with another jump in copper, have driven solid gains for resources stocks.
Are investors unusually foresighted, or simply complacent? Macquarie strategist Viktor Shvets argues it’s largely the latter, noting that investors are notoriously poor at pricing political and geopolitical risk.
