To me, Trump’s tariff announcement today shows clear deadlines (Feb 1st & June 1st) for how much longer he’s willing to be diplomatic without any rash military incursions - since the biggest fear I’ve had recently was waking up one day to an ‘invasion of a NATO ally’ report that would then trigger extreme geopolitical escalations, putting sanctions on the US and crashing the economy. While I do doubt even Trump would act that rashly (I can already see the comments saying “you never know with him”), the tariffs suggest he’s willing to use economic pressure first rather than surprise actions - aka no surprise overnight invasions in the coming months for us to wake up to with a subsequent market nosedive.
I know it doesn’t help with long term confidence, but at least it gives us a timeline we otherwise didn’t have before today. In this sense, it’s consistent with every other tariff announcement before: to create deadlines to force negotiations, make a deal that meets somewhere in the middle, and then have Trump claim that this was his plan all along. Victory.
Who does this help? It gives people time to figure out their plans for the first half of the year while navigating Q4 earnings season and typical early-year capital deployment before April tax deadlines.
Tldr: you can relax at the thought about a potential Greenland invasion for the first half of the year due to Trump’s tariffs setting clear deadlines and giving us some scope to navigate through in the meantime.
Ps: I know all this sounds ridiculous to talk about as the implications could be way worse for the planet than “thinking of the poor shareholders,” but this is an investing sub, morals are left at the door regards.
