So as quick background, I managed a portfolio for 26 individual stocks for the greater part of my 20s... some years outperformed, some years underperformed. Overall, I loved it.
I made the tough decision just over a year to go (almost) entirely passive...... 95% ETFs, leaving a small % for the odd passion position here and there - just enough to scratch the itch.
as you can see:
\- primarily S&P500 investor
\- A bit of international exposure through my all-equity ETF
\- I'm personally bullish on China so I have an aggressive weighting here...
Pulled in a roughly 20% hands-off return this previous year, and the feeling can best be described as bitter sweet.
On one hand, it's an incredible feeling to know I gave next to ZERO attention to my portfolio this year, yet was able to pull in a reliable market return. The piece of mind this approach frees up is just unbelievable.
On the other hand, I have to admit... i feel the FOMO of picking individual stocks. Keeping up with some of the gains I'm "missing out on" does weigh on me a bit... Granted, I'm fully aware we are in a strong market, so everything you touch feels like it'll go up! hahah
All the to say... my experience switching to ETFs has been one the best decisions of my life. The time and mental energy it has freed up for me far outweights any addition % points that i may (or MAY NOT have) made picking stocks.
Wish I converted to this strategy earlier. Team ETFS all the way!
