I have about $33k of an emergency fund in cash with another $40k invested and I’m trying to decide if I should invest more of the $33k. It’s currently in a HYSA.
Jobs: my job is VERY stable (teacher) but my partner’s is not. They also earn a lot less and we could do mostly without their income if we had to. I’d hold back about 6 months of their income in cash.
Retirement is well funded, maxing out IRAs, have both pension+social security and a small 403b match.
Other sinking funds for house or medical issues are funded outside the $33k in cash. That’s specifically for job loss/major sickness.
Good state and family safety nets, no debt outside mortgage and a roof loan with a low interest rate.
I’d love to do early retirement in the next 15 years and work part time which is why investing part of the emergency fund is appealing.
My investment plan would be stick it in the Vanguard VTSAX and leave it unless needed. I don’t panic when markets dip.
