Not Playing Long Ruined My Life
I burned my graduation money for college and my career.
I started trading October of 2023, probably the best time to get in the market before our huge rally’s. I was 18, and had the typical “i can beat the market” mindset. My friend helped me get into it, he only had about a year of experience but was a much safer investor.
We both started with 1k, although he shortly added almost his entire savings into it (around 10k). Me being new, thought this was dumb. Meanwhile i spent my 10k into a drain..
We would DD and research stocks. We found stocks like PLTR ($20), RKLB($4), NU($4-6), (I was huge on quantum when it was pennys), NVDA ($40 then), (RDDT), and many more. Example of photo linked
My friend would slowly buy shares, not really caring about bears, and or holding through them. He quickly 2x his portfolio within a year.
At the time I was working on programming some stock analysis tools, and other projects like algo trading systems. Which took up an unbelievable amount of time. I thought slightly I could “beat the market”. Basically holding stocks for a couple of weeks/months at most.
I’m not sure what my friend has made the past few years, but it was enough to afford an apartment at our college. We were planning to go to the same college, which is a bit more pricy.
Tbh after losing everything, i’ve decided to play long. But goddamn do I suck at sticking with my guts. I’ve let so many more opportunities, like gold, robotics, etc, slip away from my portfolio from a panic sell, i don’t blame you for calling OP an awful trader. But it was a lesson needed for me to learn.
Sometimes it just feels too late on all of my ideas and stocks i’ve had for year. It’s been just brutal watching my $1-$10 shares explode in value. And seeing a dream you/vision you once had slowly fade away but work with someone else is painful. I know 10k isn’t an extreme amount for some people here, but as a college trying to transfer for my degree now, it’s just rough.
My buddy has been planning to be a type of financial advisor, and he’s definitely got a golden portfolios to help!
My point with this post is try your best to control your emotions, don’t swipe away your shares from fear.
And if you’re new/excited, try opening a small account for a longer term strategy!
