Hello fellow regards (idk if using the real word is still allowed),
Discord is gonna go public, but I'm not sure what's the monetization plan. Everyone is comparing it to Reddit, but it's been known for some time that even normies use reddit and that the real google search is "<my search query> site:reddit.com". So the usage was there, it was also easy to add ads in between posts. But what's Discord gonna do? I know there's Discord Nitro, but I don't think it's used that much. Are they gonna put more features behind a paywall (screen sharing)? Spotify kind of ads while in voice chat? Ads between messages? I feel like Discord is quite easy to migrate off when too much enshitification happens. Whereas with reddit, you have communities built up and it's much harder to migrate everyone than just your friends. The same could be said about discord servers, but I just feel like most discord servers (non friend group ones) are the migrated reddit communities after reddit started regulating things more. When discord goes public, it'll do the same thing. In summary, I feel like there are 2 types of discord users:
\- Friend groups that can easily migrate to another platform when too much enshitification happens.
\- Discord servers that are actually migrated from reddit communities due to reddit regulations, but the same regulations will hit these communities when discord goes public.
Just thinking out loud, give me your regarded thoughts. What's your favorite crayon to chew on? What shade of red do you like the most?
