Been trading for a long time and today’s move in defense names definitely caught my eye.
After Donald Trump talked about possibly limiting dividends and buybacks for defense contractors, the market wasted no time. Names like Lockheed Martin, RTX, and Northrop Grumman all got hit pretty hard.
To me, this feels more like headline driven selling than anything fundamentally breaking overnight.
Defense spending isn’t going away. Long term contracts are still there. Geopolitics didn’t magically improve today. And honestly, turning talk into actual policy especially something as extreme as banning buybacks is easier said than done.
I do get why the market reacted. These stocks have been partly valued as “safe shareholder-friendly” plays. If that narrative gets questioned, even temporarily, multiples can compress fast.
Personally, I’m not rushing to buy, but I’m also not writing the whole sector off. Feels like one of those moments where the first move is emotional, and the real opportunity (if there is one) shows up later.
What choices would people make in such a situation?
