Hey all, I’m working on doing my first rebalancing after starting bogleheading early last year. I’m 29 with a total portfolio of just under 300k between a personal taxable account, Roth IRA, rollover Ira, HSA, and 401k.
My main questions are around the 401k:
A) I don’t know if I should move my investments out of a target date fund to be most bogleheady and have better control over my asset allocation.
B) when rebalancing am I supposed to take all my accounts and view them like one big pot or split up within each account? Splitting within each account is easy, except for the 401k where it’s a managed TDF with limited options from my employer.
C) If I keep my 401k as is, I would have to get out of a lot of international holdings in my other 3 tax-advantaged accounts and put a much higher ratio of domestic to foreign in them. Is that okay? I’m a bit nervous to be like 90% US in my HSA or Roth or wherever I decide to do the rebalance in. Is any one tax advantaged account better to rebalance in than any other?
My 401k options are attached. It’s currently a 2060 TDF with a 52/38/10 US/Intl/Bond split and I worry it might be too much bonds for my age and/or a little too heavily international assets, but I’m not sure.
My desired ratio right now would be 66.5% US/VTI, 28.5% Intl/VXUS, and 5% bonds/BND. But I’m open to advice on that, specifically regarding the bonds as I see a lot of mixed opinions on if I should or shouldn’t hold them at my age, and how much.
As of this writing, my total portfolio minus my 42k in MMFs (25k emergency fund in FDLXX and 17k in SPAXX ready to be invested once I decide how to handle all this) is 60/34.7/5.3.
Sorry this post got a little long. All help is very much appreciated, I’m still a baby bogleheader and just trying to do my best.
