Does anyone know the real impact of patents when it comes to stocks? So basically I’ve been looking at this company called ENDRA Life Sciences Inc.
The company is focused on thermoacoustic technology and is implementing changes to bring its technology to market, including strengthening the operating team, prioritizing deliverables, and changing the FDA regulatory strategy.
ENDRA's primary product is this thing called the “TAEUS liver device”, which they say utilizes thermoacoustic technology. The company has reported that they’ve aligned with the FDA on the product configuration, clinical study design, and regulatory pathway for the device, and that a pilot study is underway at three sites to inform a larger pivotal study, with the goal of submitting a de novo application to the FDA by mid-2025.
So far, the company raised $7.3 million in Q2 2024 and had $6.4 million in cash as of June 30, 2024, expected to fund operations into the first half of 2025. ENDRA's patent portfolio includes 81 issued patents globally, covering the core thermoacoustic technology and other applications. The company is working to improve its performance and leverage the CEO's experience in turnarounds.
What I don’t understand, however, is their emphasis on their 81 patents.
How much does a patent portfolio like that actually matter for a small-cap, pre-revenue medical device company? Do patents meaningfully protect shareholder value if the company still has to get FDA approval, raise more capital, and prove commercial adoption — or is this mostly marketing until there’s a real product and revenue? I’m trying to figure out whether patents at this stage are a legitimate moat or just something companies highlight to buy time.
Any input would be super helpful! Ty in advance!
