Hi, I’m 22 and I currently have about 40k in a high yield savings account for grad school. I’ve already maxed out my roth IRA for 2025 and 2026 and I contribute 8% to my 403b. I only know surface level information about investing so sorry if this comes across as silly.
I plan on going to graduate school in about 2.5-3 years which will cost 80-150k total, spread over 3 years.
It feels like a waste to keep all the money in a HYSA account; and I don’t want to risk investing in a 529 in case I don’t end up going back to school (there’s a 20% chance I might change my mind about going back to school in a year or two, but I’m currently working on the prereqs under the pretense that i am going back to school).
I know the general advice is to keep it in a HYSA bc ETFs should be held over the long term, and if the market crashes then you’ll lose a lot of your savings for school.
In that case, would NEOS funds generally be safer to invest in, while offering a higher return than a HYSA? I know itll perform less than the actual ETF funds it’s following, and that it’s mostly for older folks near retirement, but could it suit my situation too?
Another thing is that I don’t want my savings rotting in a HYSA for 2 years on the off chance that I don’t end up going back to school. Investing in NEOS funds sounds like a solution to both of my problems but I was wondering if this comes with too many risks.
