I started self directing my retirement fund about a year and a half ago, but really started taking it seriously this year last year and it’s obviously a outlier year in terms of trends and valuations but pretty happy with the results of course.
The majority of it has been from rolling LEAPs of companies I have long term confidence in but my portfolio is a bit too all over the place for my liking right now so the plan for 2026 is to consolidate into a few larger long positions and leave a bit for a few gambles as I track a few sectors. Honestly the most enjoyable part of this year has been hunting around for good buys and doing the research. Turns out what I thought was boring and tedious is super fun when your analysis pays off, literally.
I know it’s not sustainable for the next 30 years but I think I’ll certainly achieve better results than the 2.4% MER was paying for with my previous advisor and his basket of mutual funds.
