Hi all,
I have two little boys running around the house and am making 2026 the year to focus on their future. We've already been generously funding a 529 for them each, but are looking beyond that.
I've read up on UTMA's and fully understand them, but am a little concerned about handing the account over to my future 18 yo's. I look back at my decisions as an 18 year old and am struck by the fear of "what if they do XYZ", haha.
I'm considering an alternative, where I create two new Taxable accounts for each child, and fund those as if they are UTMAs. The idea would be to have full control, and periodically use it to fund things or outright gift them the money at some point. I'm thinking of a first car, wedding cost, downpayment on a house, etc.
I like the idea of having a little more control.
What are Bogleheads doing outside of 529s? Sticking with UTMA's or taking on full ownership via a Taxable account?
Thank you!
