Summary

Felix Zulauf returns to discuss his 2025 outlook after correctly anticipating a Q1 market correction. He expects a global recession, a possible retest of the April 7 lows before a new secular bull market, and a continued structural shift away from the US dollar and US Treasuries. He remains long-term bullish on gold and US equities but sees near-term risks in gold, commercial and residential real estate, and long-duration bonds.

  • Felix Zulauf says the Q1 correction was of cyclical degree and may not be over; he sees a possible retest or marginal undercut of the April 7 S&P 500 low before a turn higher.
  • He expects a global recession in 2025 driven by tariffs, policy uncertainty, reduced government spending, and stretched consumers.
  • He believes the US dollar has structurally lost reserve status, with foreign holders able to sell US assets and central banks diversifying into gold.
  • He is long-term bullish on gold but warns of a buying climax and multi-month correction.
  • He expects structurally higher inflation and interest rates, making long-term bonds riskier than stocks over the next five to seven years.
  • He sees US commercial and residential real estate as peaked or correcting.
  • He expects fiscal stimulus and eventually more QE to lead to rising nominal growth, inflation, rates, and asset prices, with the S&P 500 potentially reaching 7,500 by 2027.

Watch S&P retest of April low.
He sees the 2025 market correction of cyclical degree as possibly not over, with a possible temporary recovery into early Q3 and another decline on bad earnings, and ideally a retest or marginal undercut of the April 7 low around 4,835 in the S&P 500 to shake out weak money before a sustainable rally.

US dollar losing reserve status.
The US-centric world order and rule-based trade system are being destroyed by US policy; trade is increasingly settled in non-USD currencies, central banks no longer need to hold dollars as reserves, and foreign holders of US Treasuries, corporate debt, and equities can sell US assets, creating a structural dollar overhang and downward pressure on the US dollar.

Long-term bonds risky; yields higher.
The 40-year bond bull market ended in June 2020, and the world is in a structurally different environment of rising inflation and interest rates. Long-end yields may fall to mid-3% in a recession but will not return to 2% or lower, and over the next five to seven years the long-term bond market is much more risky than the stock market.

Long-term bull on gold.
He is a long-term bull on gold because the US-led unipolar order is gone, the US dollar has lost reserve-currency status, central banks and BRICS no longer need to hold dollars, and after seeing Russian assets frozen they prefer physically stored gold as an alternative reserve asset.
Felix Zulauf Founder, Zulauf Consulting 26:30
Commercial real estate weak; offices crushed.
Commercial real estate is weak in many US cities, and he cites a real estate expert saying Manhattan office real estate is worth virtually zero because values have fallen so much while debt remains outstanding. Real estate is not a safe haven.
Felix Zulauf Founder, Zulauf Consulting 27:02
US home prices have peaked.
US home prices have peaked after a good multi-year run; even Florida’s hot residential market has peaked, volume has declined sharply, and realtors complain of slow business. Real estate is correcting for investors and is not an asset that goes up forever.
