Avoid broad venture beta, back outlier funds.
Broad venture beta has underwhelmed public equities and likely does not justify the illiquidity premium, especially for large funds. Nomads instead looks bottoms-up for outlier funds: for every outlier company like Coinbase, there are multiple outlier funds that return multiples of their fund because of that company. Therefore, avoid generic venture beta and allocate to differentiated outlier funds.

India life sciences is underfished.
Indian life sciences is an underfished pocket of venture: even in 2021, very few investors were writing checks there, and if you go to India and speak about life science, you are one of only a couple of people writing checks. This scarcity creates an arbitrage for LPs and GPs.
Emerging pre-seed managers find pre-consensus deals.
Large funds are optimized to deploy large tickets and chase consensus, so they do not fish in strange or fringe places. Small, nimble emerging and pre-seed managers can discover outlier founders and companies before consensus forms, then act as high-signal filters for larger funds to follow on. This creates structural alpha for LPs who back them.
Frontier AI only if early access.
Bay Area frontier AI is extremely hot; talent clusters quickly and markups happen fast, so the game is about winning access early rather than picking. It can be attractive if a fund can win very early at sensible valuations, but most funds cannot compete with Sequoia, Conviction, and Benchmark and should avoid playing.
Life sciences venture is undercapitalized.
Life sciences and tech bio are less hot subsets of venture right now and remain undercapitalized. Institutional LPs were interested in Dimension because credible tech bio funds are scarce and it is one of the only games in town, especially in a disinterested funding cycle.
Dimension is only credible tech bio fund.
Dimension is a tech bio fund spun out of Lux by Zach, Nan, and Adam. They are super smart and one of the few teams with credible, proven ability to raise and deploy capital in a disinterested life science cycle, making them the only game in town for LPs seeking tech bio exposure.
Compound's Michael has network and calibration.
Nomads invested in Michael from Compound. Michael is thesis-driven, explicit about decision-making, early to new domains, understands how technology disseminates and adoption looks, and has a strong network and talent-calibration ability. People miss that his network and talent calibration are the core edge.
Version One's Boris adapts bottoms-up.
Boris Wertz at Version One has successfully reinvented himself across SaaS in Canada, marketplaces, crypto, India, and deep tech. He adapts fluidly and enters new markets bottoms-up, led by the right people, with a good nose for who to listen to.
Brazil pre-seed is undercapitalized.
Very few VCs are actually writing pre-seed checks in Brazil, so the market is structurally undercapitalized at that stage. A global fund with a high bar can find compelling pre-seed opportunities.
China venture is capital-dry opportunity.
China was and still is capital dry, creating opportunity. If you are a global investor and keep the bar at a global maximum without getting cute on trend-level stuff, China is an attractive place to deploy venture capital.
Global venture with global maximum bar.
A global venture strategy can go to underfished markets like India, Brazil, and China as long as it maintains SF-level global maximum benchmarks for GPs and founders and avoids trend-level compromises. This broadens the opportunity set beyond Bay Area consensus.
Africa venture requires cherry-picking.
Africa is tough because there is little downstream capital and local investors often lack calibration and over-index on pedigree, MBA, and investment-banking backgrounds. However, a global fund can cherry-pick the best deals, play geographic arbitrage, and act as a signal to downstream funds, especially in capital-efficient businesses.
SV Angel is early diversified convex.
SV Angel pays up a fair bit but is still very early to many companies and has a unique network that enables a diversified, convex portfolio. This is a rare model that avoids adverse selection while remaining highly convex.
Hummingbird has flexible opportunistic managers.
Jordan admires the Hummingbird team—Val Ten, Frank, and Baron—for doing a fantastic job. Val Ten specifically believes in young people and maintains opportunistic, flexible mandates, which helps them adapt to new opportunities.
Greyhound's Pogo finds core reasons.
Pogo Sideon runs Greyhound and is a great investor with a hyper-structured, curious approach. He is very good at finding the simple core reason why something will or will not work, similar to physics-of-the-problem thinking.
