Summary

Yu Chang-hee, CEO of Yusta, discusses why the combined 100 trillion won Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix buyback programs represent a paradigm shift for Korean equities. He remains constructive on SK Hynix, prefers Samsung Electronics for new money, and sees a near-term semiconductor event window supporting the group. He also covers rotation themes including secondary batteries, biotech led by Alteogen, data center/cloud names, and expresses caution on Korean stablecoin-theme stocks while advocating direct Bitcoin ownership.

  • Yu Chang-hee trimmed only 10% of his SK Hynix margin position and expects higher prices.
  • Samsung Electronics is favored for new money because its shareholder return catalyst is still pending.
  • The combined 100 trillion won buyback is viewed as absorbing foreign selling and supporting KOSPI.
  • The semiconductor event calendar into Nvidia earnings supports holding semis.
  • Gold and Bitcoin are preferred directly; Korean stablecoin theme stocks are avoided.
  • Biotech is favored, with Alteogen as a specific long and immune-oncology rotation as a watch idea.
  • Data center/cloud names may be replacing semiconductor equipment as the semis follow-through trade.
Ideas
Samsung Electronics has better new-money momentum.
The near-term semiconductor event calendar including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix/Micron/Nvidia next-generation chip and HBM disclosures, the contract review event, and Nvidia's August 26 earnings is likely to be supportive for semis. He sees no reason for the semiconductor complex to break down before these catalysts and would hold semiconductor positions through early-to-mid next week.
100 trillion buyback power supports Korean market.
The combined Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix buyback/cancellation of around 100 trillion won is a massive paradigm shift. It can absorb foreign selling, remove overhang, reduce free float, and improve overall Korean market supply/demand dynamics, giving KOSPI a stronger floor and better market tone over the next few months.
Secondary battery trends are improving.
Secondary battery stocks have recently rallied and are showing improving trends. Yu Chang-hee specifically notes SK Innovation, Samsung SDI and L&F are moving well, suggesting the sector is participating in the market's broader recovery.
Gold may rise on dollar weakness.
Gold has moved up about 10% from 4,100 to 4,500 as the dollar weakened. Yu Chang-hee believes that if Bessent policy causes further dollar weakness or if inflation concerns return, gold has additional upside potential.
Buy Bitcoin directly, not related stocks.
Yu Chang-hee argues that investors who want crypto exposure should buy Bitcoin directly rather than buying related stocks with indirect exchange or company exposure. He views direct Bitcoin ownership as the correct way to express the crypto trade.
Avoid Korean stablecoin theme stocks.
The rally in KakaoPay, Hecto Financial and Coocon on US stablecoin legislation is likely a one-off theme trade. Yu Chang-hee sees no meaningful Korean company earnings linkage yet and would wait for a clear Korean legal/regulatory framework before buying domestic stablecoin-related names.
Data center names may lead semis follow-through.
On a strong semiconductor day, equipment names did not follow as they usually do. Instead, data center and cloud-related stocks such as Naver, LG CNS and GS Construction gained, which Yu Chang-hee interprets as a possible regime shift in which semiconductor strength may increasingly flow into data center/neo-cloud names rather than traditional semiconductor equipment.
KOSDAQ may gain on improved breadth.
KOSDAQ's major sectors including secondary batteries, robotics, semiconductor materials/equipment and biotech are showing broadly okay sentiment. Yu Chang-hee continues to view biotech positively and believes this improved breadth can help KOSDAQ strengthen further.
Alteogen can reach 400,000 won.
Alteogen is directly affected by Moderna's positive Keytruda combination data and has additional technology export contract expectations. After today's 10% gain, Yu Chang-hee sees a break of 350,000 won as opening a path toward 400,000 won.
Immune-oncology biotech may rotate into focus.
The Moderna cancer vaccine moment may shift biotech focus from obesity/diabetes toward immune-oncology. Yu Chang-hee says platform names such as Liga Bio and AB Bio could attract attention because Korean immune-oncology companies have larger potential upside if this theme spreads.
Robotics needs confirmation before entry.
Robotics is not fundamentally bad, but the Unitree-related boost was dampened by the Korean market selloff and the sector ended mixed. Yu Chang-hee wants to see whether robotics names stage a reversal tomorrow or early next week before treating the sector as a buy.
