Summary

The episode covers the collapse of U.S.-Canada trade talks and new 50% tariffs, with USTR Jamieson Greer arguing the macro impact is small. Steve Liesman reports the Treasury may use its General Account to backstop long-term bond buybacks and influence yields. The hosts also discuss Nvidia's reported Perplexity investment and Nvidia's role supporting AI valuations, while Sprout CEO Shelley Li details strong GPU residual values, power as the key AI bottleneck, and maintenance risks for older chips.

  • U.S.-Canada trade talks collapse and 50% U.S. tariffs hit $20 billion of Canadian goods, with Canada vowing retaliation.
  • USTR Greer says the tariffs are only 5% of imports from Canada and 0.6% of U.S. consumption, limiting economic damage.
  • Treasury may use its $950 billion Treasury General Account to fund larger long-end bond buybacks and influence long-term yields.
  • Nvidia is reportedly considering an investment in Perplexity at over $30 billion, with Nvidia described as a central bank of AI.
  • Sprout CEO Shelley Li says Hopper GPUs retain 60-70% of their value after 3.5 years and hyperscalers keep servers about six years.
  • Power, not chip factory output, is described as the biggest multi-decade constraint on AI data-center buildout.
  • Obsolete components could turn high-value H100 chips into scrap, posing a risk to GPU residual values.

Treasury TGA firepower supports long-term Treasuries
The Treasury could use its nearly $1 trillion Treasury General Account to fund expanded long-end government bond buybacks. Senior Treasury officials say this rainy-day fund gives Treasury considerable firepower to influence long-term bond yields, and even the threat of using it could support long-term Treasuries, addressing market skepticism that last week's buyback plan was too limited.

Nvidia financing underpins AI sector valuations
Nvidia GPU hardware is lasting far longer than the market's assumed 2-3 year life. Hyperscalers are only letting servers go after about six years, and Hopper GPUs are still retaining 60-70% of their value after three and a half years. That strong residual value supports treating GPUs as financeable collateral and underpins Nvidia's $500 billion financing plan.
