Summary

Park Se-ik and Choi Ho discuss the semiconductor equipment normalization after the crowded AI and semiconductor unwind, highlight sharp price increases and re-rating potential in Simmtech and Samsung Electro-Mechanics, repeat a Carnival Cruise oil-driven range trade, and argue that customized HBM makes Korean memory names structural long-term holdings. KOSPI starts above 7,000 as the market recovers from the late July plunge, with some discussion of taking partial ETF profits. The conversation also covers foreign positioning and the Leonard fund liquidation as signs of the semiconductor bubble burst.

  • Semiconductor equipment leaders Lam Research and Applied Materials are viewed as attractive after a valuation normalization selloff, supported by China legacy demand and advanced logic/DRAM equipment growth.
  • Carnival Cruise is reiterated as a range trade: buy under $25 and sell into the $28-33 zone as oil prices fall.
  • Simmtech is highlighted for accelerating module PCB and substrate prices and a low-value to high-value re-rating; Samsung Electro-Mechanics is also cited for MLCC/substrate price momentum.
  • Park Se-ik argues that AI chips are designed from the start with customized HBM, making Samsung Electronics and SK hynix structural beneficiaries and buyable on memory downcycle dips.
  • KOSPI breaks back above 7,000, and partial profit-taking on ETFs is briefly discussed after the recovery.
  • Foreign put/call activity and the Leonard fund liquidation are reviewed as evidence of how crowded semiconductor positioning unwound.
Ideas
Choi Ho Vice President 1:45
Semiconductor equipment decline is normalization opportunity.
After extreme semiconductor sector crowding unwound, semiconductor equipment names sold off alongside memory stocks even though fundamentals remain supportive. Applied Materials is about 40% below its high and Lam Research fell from roughly 440 to 250 after valuations reached around 50x. Choi views this as normalization rather than fundamental damage: China is still buying legacy semiconductor equipment, and advanced logic and DRAM equipment demand is growing.
Park Se-ik CEO, ex-Chief Strategist 12:02
Trade Carnival between $25 and $33.
Falling oil prices are lifting Carnival Cruise again. Park reiterates a range-trading strategy: buy in tranches when it breaks below $25, and sell in tranches as oil declines push the stock up into the $28 to $33 zone.
Choi Ho Vice President 18:52
Simmtech re-rating with substrate price surge.
Simmtech's module PCB price has surged from 0.7 million won per square meter to 1.28 million won in the second quarter, and substrate prices are up 42% since last year. This is much faster than the 2019-2022 IT boom. Simmtech is the global number one in SoC AM by share and capacity, is now seeing earnings inflection, and is undergoing a re-rating from low-value to high-value. Samsung Electro-Mechanics is also seeing MLCC and substrate price momentum, and Choi argues it is too early to sell or trim these names.
Park Se-ik CEO, ex-Chief Strategist 40:02
Custom HBM makes Korean memory structural buy.
The AI hardware regime is becoming memory-centric: AI chips are designed from the start with customized HBM, making Korean memory makers similar to a foundry for custom memory. Even if the commodity memory cycle dips in 2026 or 2027, customized HBM demand from US big tech and AI chip developers should keep Samsung Electronics and SK hynix in a structural uptrend, so share price drops are buying opportunities.
