Avoid chasing nuclear and Doosan Enerbility
The nuclear power theme is an event-driven, deadline-bound trade rather than an earnings- or order-driven investment. Such rallies tend to be sold into, and the recent run peaked quickly. Doosan Enerbility, the sector leader, hit resistance and rolled over after the first day, so investors should avoid chasing the nuclear theme after the move.
US tech attractive after Nasdaq pullback
Now is a good season for US technology. The Nasdaq has pulled back slightly, and the USD/KRW rate around 1,340 is favorable for converting into dollar assets. This makes US tech attractive on this dip.
Hold Samsung and SK hynix for dividends
Samsung Electronics and SK hynix should be held rather than sold. Their third-quarter earnings estimates were cut mainly because of the won's fall, but underlying earnings remain strong and unprecedented; the market needs time to adapt to this new earnings level. Share buybacks are supporting the market, and foreigners may return after the buyback ends and the dividend schedule is clarified. October should be better than September. Investors who are overweight should avoid panic selling, collect dividends, and wait; those with cash can accumulate on weakness.
Avoid small caps; buy earnings laggards
Accounts heavy in small- and mid-cap stocks should be reduced. Small/mid caps often use more credit and are hard to exit; after a market rebound, large caps and market-leading earnings stocks rise first, and by October the market moves into earnings season. Investors should instead concentrate on controllable, beaten-down earnings stocks, buying them cheaply before the next earnings season rather than chasing popular small/mid-cap areas such as semiconductor equipment/materials or biotech.

Buy shipbuilding and defense on dips
Korean shipbuilding and defense are attractive under the current weak-market conditions. They have fallen a lot or have not moved, their earnings are good, and their earnings estimates are being revised upward. They are less shaken by the AI cycle and macro volatility than semiconductors, and shipbuilding still trades at historically cheap valuations even after an expected rise in valuation multiples. Accumulate them on down days rather than chasing up days.
Power equipment offers a monitored value setup
Korean power equipment is not bad at current prices. Its earnings estimates are being revised upward, but the sector has not moved much. It may follow semiconductors later, though it can be affected by semiconductor volatility and US macro. It is a sector to monitor and accumulate rather than chase.
Korean market may bottom today
The Korean equity market has been range-bound and lacks strong buyers, moving like a chart-driven pre-COVID market. However, the market has largely priced in a rate hike and other macro risks, so today could be a short-term low. After Chuseok and Micron's late-September results, attention shifts to earnings season, which could improve the mood. Trading the index is preferable to chasing small caps, but event risk means position sizing should depend on cash levels.
