Summary

Bloomberg’s MLIV team discusses the 2026 equity outlook, Asia tech, US stocks, and currency positioning. Skylar Montgomery Koning argues the equity market should be more bullish than consensus because growth is holding up with monetary and fiscal ease, and she expects euro downside due to crowded long positioning and normalized hedging drivers. The conversation highlights the risk that consensus dollar-downside expectations versus the euro may be overdone.

  • 2026 equity outlook is discussed with a focus on growth.
  • Consensus estimates are seen as too cautious given supportive monetary and fiscal policy.
  • Strong growth historically produces positive equity returns, with average positive years up 17%.
  • Euro positioning is heavily long, similar to a prior peak that preceded weakness.
  • Consensus expects dollar downside versus the euro, but history suggests caution.
  • Skylar Montgomery Koning sees euro downside over the next year or two.
  • Asia tech and US stocks are mentioned as parts of the broader equity picture.

Bullish equities on growth and policy ease.
She is more bullish on the 2026 equity outlook than consensus because consensus estimates look cautious relative to the growth context. When growth is strong, equity returns are very positive, with the average positive year up 17%, and with growth expected to hold up, monetary easing still feeding into growth, and US fiscal expansion, equities should return more than 10%, which happens 60% of the time.

Euro downside on crowded long positioning.
She sees euro downside over the next year or two because positioning is very long the euro, with leveraged fund longs comparable to the 2018 peak that preceded a two-year decline in the euro trade-weighted index. Consensus is again expecting dollar downside versus the euro, but that has happened less than 50% of the time over the past nine years, and last year's dollar-downside drivers, mainly hedging-ratio increases, have normalized.
