Summary

The episode centers on the Bank of Japan's second rate hike in three months, which left the yen weaker, and on oil's third straight daily decline as Saudi Arabia repairs its East-West pipeline and Gulf diplomacy builds ahead of the UN General Assembly. BNP Paribas's FX strategist lays out dollar-strength trades in Asia and against the euro as central banks keep tightening, while DBS's CIO stays very bullish on AI, favoring semiconductors now, software later and energy as the power constraint bites. The show also covers the US's $24.3 billion F-35 sale to Saudi Arabia, Turkey's move to contain an asset-manager crisis and momentum in African capital markets, including Ethiopia's exchange expansion.

  • BOJ raises rates 25bp for a second time in three months; two dissents leave the yen weaker near 157.
  • Oil falls a third day as Saudi Arabia restores its East-West pipeline and traders eye next week's UN meetings on Iran.
  • BNP Paribas sees USD/JPY toward 163, a squeeze-driven long dollar-Asia trade led by USD/THB, and EUR/USD toward or below 1.14 if Brent holds near $100.
  • DBS's CIO remains very bullish AI: semiconductors in the infrastructure phase, software applications later and energy on AI power demand.
  • Turkey's authorities move to contain asset-manager redemptions; bank stocks rebound.
  • The US approves a $24.3 billion F-35 sale to Saudi Arabia, and Israel and Morocco agree to deepen ties.
  • Ethiopia's exchange approves 11 new listings and sub-Saharan Africa debt issuance runs near recent highs, signaling improving African capital markets.
  • The BOE holds rates with a hawkish tilt, while the Fed's tightening path and next week's Trump-Xi summit remain key macro drivers.
Ideas

USD/JPY to 163 as yen weakens
The two BOJ dissenters were known doves appointed by PM Takaichi, so the statement was not hawkish enough and disappointed the build-up of long-yen positions; unless Governor Ueda's press conference turns more hawkish, BNP expects the yen to stay on a weakening path, with USD/JPY rising toward 163 this year and holding around that level.

Long dollar-Asia, especially USD/THB
Fed tightening provides some cyclical dollar support and an October hike risk could keep it supported, but BNP is not keen to chase the dollar broadly; if long the dollar anywhere, it prefers dollar-Asia because the significant build-up of long Asian currency positions could get squeezed if the Fed keeps hiking, with USD/THB expected to move the most in Asia.

EUR/USD falls toward 1.14 on oil
If energy prices stay around or above $100, FX markets should price more central-bank tightening from inflationary pressure, with Asia and Europe especially vulnerable; BNP sees EUR/USD declining toward 1.14 this year and testing below 1.14 if Brent holds around $100.

Bullish AI; early innings, semis lead
DBS tells clients to position around structural trends, and AI is the biggest, most embedded one; it is very bullish because the world is only in the early innings of AI deployment, with the infrastructure layer and semiconductor companies the clear beneficiaries so far.
DBS CIO Chief Investment Officer, DBS 31:27
Software applications win as AI deploys
Once AI is deployed across the world and across industries, the software applications layer should do well, becoming the next phase of the AI trend after the current infrastructure build-out.
DBS CIO Chief Investment Officer, DBS 31:39
AI power needs revive energy plays
AI is power-hungry and there is not enough electricity today, so DBS expects the energy plays to come back as AI-driven power demand builds.
