Shin Takamiya Venture Capitalist, Globis Capital Partners This Week in Startups
Japan's startup ecosystem is rapidly scaling.
Japan's startup ecosystem has undergone a step-change over the last decade: annual venture investment in Japan has grown from roughly $300 million to about $10 billion, lifetime employment is no longer the top aspiration for young people, and the country has produced 77 startups valued at more than $1 billion after Mercari's 2018 IPO. This supports a structurally bullish view on Japanese startups and the domestic venture ecosystem.

Japan policy supports startup ecosystem.
Only about 2% of startup funding in Japan goes to women founders. They raise less and are valued lower than male peers, creating a cheap entry point for investors. However, women-founded companies that IPOed between 2020 and 2024 were valued 1.5 times higher than male peers, creating a potential discount-entry/premium-exit arbitrage that few investors are focused on. MPower launched Japan's first women founders focused fund, backed by the Tokyo government and Mitsubishi entities.
