=== SUMMARY ===
- Meta settles California teen lawsuit for ~$18B, far below the headline $1.4T and the author’s own $100B liability estimate.
- Author believes the settlement is a best-case scenario: Meta denies wrongdoing, sets manageable industry standards, and reduces a major legal overhang.
- Author remains long META, arguing the lower legal liability makes the stock even more undervalued.
- Quality assessment: Decent DD with specific settlement terms and legal/valuation reasoning, though enforcement skepticism adds speculative uncertainty.

Speaker: u/Wild_Space
Thesis:
1. THE FACT: Meta settled the CA teen lawsuit for ~$18B, replacing the author's estimated $100B liability.
2. THE BRIDGE: Reducing this legal overhang lowers expected future costs and removes a major bear argument.
3. THE VERDICT: Long META is supported by improved legal clarity and still-undervalued fundamentals.
4. RISKS: Enforcement may tighten; teen engagement/ad revenue could be impacted; other states or peers may change terms.
Timeframe: medium-term
Key Points:
- CA lawsuit liability cut from $100B to $18B
- Meta denies wrongdoing; sets industry standard
- Teen usage caps manageable due to parental overrides
- Age detection enforcement remains a key uncertainty
- Legal overhang removal supports long META thesis

Meta will pay $12.7B over 10 years. And an additional $5.3B if TikTok and Youtube also pay $5.3 and also agree to the same terms Meta agreed to. These include:
|Restriction for < 18|Actual requirement|
|:-|:-|
|Daily usage|2 hours across FB + Instagram|
|Override|Parent can allow more|
|Night|Block midnight–6am|
|School|Notifications muted 8am–3pm|
|Algorithmic feed|Teen can choose chronological/non-personalized; parent can require it|
|Autoplay|Teen can disable; parent can require|
|Likes|Counts hidden by default|
|Filters|Cosmetic-surgery/extreme-makeup filters blocked|
|Age detection|**Stronger proactive age assurance**|
|Multiple accounts|Usage tracked across accounts|
|DMs|Excluded from usage/night/school restrictions|
>"The majority of the terms are required to remain in place for 10 years, but our Time Limit and Night Mode features will start with a five-year commitment. However, if industry peers sign on to the agreement, it will both extend this commitment to 10 years and prompt stronger default limits — reducing the Daily Limit to one hour per app and expanding Night Mode hours to 10:00 PM–7:00 AM (up from midnight–6:00 AM)."

Sounds like a best case scenario for Meta. They deny wrong-doing and get to set the standard. The $1.4T headline disappears. And call me naive, but at first blush, the terms sound like a win for California and society in general.
However, I am skeptical of the actual enforcement. On one hand, Meta claims to advertisers that they can target middle-aged suburban mothers looking to get into pilates, but then on the other hand they claim futility at identifying users under the age of 13. So we'll see if this actually has teeth.
I had about a $100B Legal Liability pencilled in for this lawsuit. I can bring that down to $18B. Making Meta even more undervalued imo. (Long META)
