[+5] u/TheDavidRomic: 1)You're not reducing risk
You're taking a position that was already losing money and adding MORE downside exposure below your current breakeven. Your max loss goes from $3,500 to something much larger because now you have naked short puts at $1,485 all the way down to $1,330. If SNDK drops another 10-15%, youre fcked.
2)
That $14,000 credit sounds good, but you're essentially saying "I'll take $14,000 today in exchange for risking $15,000+ tomorrow."
That's not a favorable trade mathematically unless you're very confident SNDK won't drop below $1,330. And you wouldn’t be asking here question if you were confident but I on the other side understand that you came here to listen to different perspectives.
3) this is about your conviction
If you truly believed SNDK wouldn't drop further, you wouldn't need to roll anything—you'd just hold and collect the $1,900ish max profit on expiration. The fact that you're considering this roll suggests you have some doubt about your short puts being safe, which is exactly when you should NOT be adding more short exposure below that level.
4) about your breakeven
It's misleading. Your breakeven only matters if the stock actually recovers to that level. If you're worried enough to consider rolling, what's your actual conviction that it will recover 3.1% by 5/15? And if it doesn't, that lower breakeven doesn't help you—it just means you lose slightly less..
My opinion:
Close the position now and take the $1,593 loss. Yes, it hurts, but you're out of a position that's causing you stress apparently. Or get some balls and stick to your thesis if it hasn’t changed.
The reason your roll "seems too easy" is because it's not actually reducing risk but it’s making it bigger.
You're taking a position that's already uncomfortable and doubling down on the thesis that SNDK won't drop further. That's hope.
If you're right about consolidation, you don't need this roll. If you're not sure, the roll is too risky. The sweet spot for rolling is when you're confident in your directional thesis but just need more time or a slightly better entry—and it doesn't sound like that's where you are here.
Hope I didn’t get something wrong here but if I did please feel free to correct me✌️
Sincerely,
David
