Japanese equities are an attractive rotation destination for investors who are over-concentrated in AI and semiconductor stocks, as part of a broader strategy to rotate into other geographies.
The yen's underlying trends have turned more positive. After intervention, the outlook depends on fundamentals, and the Bank of Japan is likely to hike rates in October with potentially two more hikes next year, supporting further yen strength.
Gold has plenty more upside driven by expected dollar weakness over the next 12 months, its role as a classic inflationary hedge, concerns about sovereign debt-to-GDP ratios making it an attractive quasi-currency, and continued central bank buying (89% of central banks surveyed plan to increase gold allocation). Dips are viewed as buying opportunities. BNP Paribas has a 12-month gold target of $5,000.
Semiconductor stocks are a multi-year AI story. The recent pullback has created more interesting and much better priced entry levels compared to where they were, although the segment remains volatile. Investors with the ability to tolerate risk can use the dip to buy.
Industrials are a safer, easier way to play the AI theme indirectly, as they are beneficiaries of the AI buildout without the high volatility of direct AI semiconductor stocks.
